Golden Spike Electric Corporation (GSE) was established in 1990 by Darwin Thompson. He sold his motorcycle and purchased two fiberglass ladders, one hole hawg drill, one sawzall and built a rack for his truck. He served as president while his wife Laurie served as Secretary and treasurer. He and his father Lyman Thompson spent time doing small projects in existing residences and new homes. Many friends and neighbors hired them to design and complete their projects.
In 1991 Darwin’s good friend Burt Christensen joined the company as Vice president of the company; together they hired part time employees to assist them as they started contracting larger projects. Residential projects were there main source of business however the commercial remodeling work was starting to pick up. Many of the projects included remodels of larger buildings including the Garland Tabernacle, Lewiston Fire Station and the Lewiston grade school. As they became acquainted with the general contractors in the area they were asked to bid on projects including commercial banks, churches and small stores.
In 1997 Burt decided to leave the company and start his own electrical contracting business. Darwin decided to hire his first full time employee and take on additional work. The housing market was starting to pick up and additional general contractors started relying on GSE to complete their work. Bidding larger homes and commercial projects became part of the business plan as well as providing preferred electrical construction and maintenance work for a few contractors and business in the local area.
The business was expanded into Idaho with many projects in the Malad and Island Park areas. Island Park projects included four to six cabin’s being completed each year. The expertise of wiring cabins moved back into the local area and a few log homes were completed in northern Utah. Idaho projects included the Weston church remodel, Malad church HVAC upgrade and the Malad Sheriff’s office remodel.
By providing quality and honest work many Generals Contractors have added GSE to their list of sub-contractors . With additional opportunities and qualified employees, larger projects were possible to obtain and complete. The major part of the business has been commercial projects such as churches, C Stores, schools, commercial and industrial buildings. A few projects include a Smithfield Stake Center, Tremonton Stake Center, Fielding Elementary, Elwood Waste Water Treatment Plant, Tremonton Waste Water Treatment Plant, Tarter Gate Industrial and Millard Refrigeration.
Darwin along with another good friend Terry Wyatt began to see the growing need for and automation company in the northern Utah area. Golden Spike Automation Corporation (GSA) was developed to take on these needs and work closely with GSE. The automation company takes on automation and controls work solely independent of GSE and also provide the expertise of PLC, HMI and SCADA controls for the projects completed by GSE. Together the companies can provide a complete working package for projects needing both automation and electric work.
Darwin’s son Tyler has worked in the company for many years but has recently become a stock holder and has brought many great functions, knowledge and expertise to the business. Home automation and generator back-up power are a few of them. Tyler has completed his degree in Electrical Engineering, became a Master Electrician, and plays a major part in managing the company. He has great leadership skills, and works hard to provide the quality of work needed to be successful. He has high expectations for the business and its employees and plans on taking over GSE in the future.
